Advantages of Aluminized Steel

How Aluminized Steel is Made

Aluminized coating is applied to steel by running the steel through a bath of Aluminum and Silicon Alloy. The process is similar to the Hot Dipped Galvanizing process with one exception, the bath is AlSi rather than Zinc. Aluminized Steel has the following three benefits. (1) Corrosion protection as provided by the Aluminum coating, (2) the superior strength of steel as compared to other metals, and (3) The Aluminum and Silicon alloy provides excellent shielding from heat.
Although steel is strong, aluminized steel is best used with projects that do not require a high strength-to-weight ratio. It is also important to remember that aluminum does corrode faster than Zinc. The reason it can be preferable to Zinc-coated products is because Aluminum can with stand temperatures much greater than Zinc. There is also an oxide (Al2O3) that forms after the Aluminum has oxidized which is so strongly bonded to the base metal that the steel is still protected.
